One thing you should try in your evaluation

is to put this database, or some large discussion database, onto a server using db2nsf and use that copy for a few days, mark things read, leave some unread, post items and so on. What I've seen consistently is that errors soon start to arise when navigating to next unread, either unread documents are not found or a message box "NIF: DB2 navigation error" gets displayed.

I'd be surprised if there is a performance gain for regular notes database access. The benefit I see is that where db2 is in use online backup and recovery of db2 databases is a solved problem and using db2nsf notes backup is then a solved problem for free. (Almost, a few special purpose databases can't be in db2.)
